Chemical engineering deals with designing, controlling, optimizing, and improving chemical processes. Students who are interested in core chemical engineering mostly pursue their interest through pursuing Chemical engineering in BITS.
Chemical engineering core placements have 3 major roles for which companies come: Manufacturing roles, SCM/operations/Business Analytics roles, and Research and Development roles. Manufacturing roles include positions like Graduate engineering trainee, process design engineer, etc.
Preparing for such roles start from your second year itself and hence this track will be more focused on what all topics are important to have a great shot at getting a Chemical engineering placement
CDC,s or Compulsory Discipline courses, are the heart of any degree here in BITS. They teach you about the fundamentals of the subject and form your foundation.
CHE F212 Fluid Mechanics and CHE F241 Heat Transfer are the most fundamental courses. The concepts you learn here are directly used while working in manufacturing-based roles at different plants. Heat exchangers and pumps can be said to be the most important topics but having an in-depth knowledge of the entire subject is essential even from an interview perspective.
CHE F244 Separation processes - 1 and CHE F313 Separation processes - 2 which are usually taught as mass transfer in other colleges are also quite important. They cover very important topics like distillation.
CHE F211 Chemical Process Calculations is also a very fundamental course and topics like stoichiometry are also important. CHE F243 Material Sciences and Engineering is a very important course if you want to sit for Research and Development Placements.
DEls or Disciplinary electives are the extra elective courses you can do according to your interest to have a deeper understanding of a specific subdomain of chemical engineering.
CHE F419 Chemical Process technology is an important course from the interview perspective as it is a CDC in many of the top IITs. It is also quite important for the GATE examination.
Some other industry-specific DEls are CHE F241 Biochemical Engineering, CHE F422 Petroleum Refining Technology, CHE F411 Environmental Pollution Control, CHE F414 Transportation Phenomena, etc.
CHE F423 Membrane Science and Engineering is an important course for people who want to get into research.
Other than the courses, having sound knowledge of safety practices while performing lab experiments is also essential.
Open Electives are basically courses from other undergraduate programs which you can take to modify your course.
ME F421 Supply Chain management is one of the most important courses one can take, as many core companies come for Chemical engineering placements. Expository will soon have a separate track for supply chain management.
